Two days after Christmas, we had the privilege of joining Cagayan State University’s outreach program at the Barangay Gym of Annafatan, Amulung, Cagayan. Despite the rain and the distance, the warmth of the community’s welcome and the joy on everyone’s faces made the journey more than worth it.
The CSU College of Law, under the leadership of Atty. Norman, and the college where I teach, enthusiastically participated in this meaningful event alongside other colleges. Our student government hosted lively and heartwarming games for the children, and their laughter and smiles lit up the rainy day. It was truly inspiring to see professors and students coming together, united by the simple yet profound goal of making others happy.
As part of the program, I had the chance to assist in the free legal aid service. One observation struck me deeply: clients came prepared, with their documents in order and strong cases to present. However, a common obstacle for them was the lack of resources to pursue legal action. This reminded me of the importance of accessible legal assistance and how much of a difference it can make in people’s lives.
The day ended with an unexpected yet memorable adventure. Even before heading to the event, the engine icon on my dashboard had already lit up. However, knowing how important this outreach was, I decided to proceed, trusting that the experience and purpose of the day would outweigh any challenges. I asked Atty. Rod, a close friend and fellow professor, to join me in a convoy on the way home just in case. Sure enough, my engine gave out in a very traffic-congested area near Buntun Bridge.
Here’s where the series of “coincidences” began. Atty. Rod gave me the number of a mechanic, who in turn gave me another contact. This contact then informed me that there was a shop right where I had stopped—and its mechanic was someone he knew! Atty. Rey, my law office partner, whose unwavering support I deeply appreciate, was also ready to assist if the car couldn’t be fixed, but thankfully, it was. With everything resolved, I was able to arrive back at the office safe and sound. Reflecting on the day, I’m reminded of how moments like these teach us patience, resilience, and gratitude for the kindness of others.
To our students, fellow professors, and everyone who contributed to this effort, thank you for making this day truly special. And to the people of Annafatan, thank you for allowing us to serve and celebrate the season of giving with you.
Here’s to more opportunities to give back in the coming year!
